Compulsory School Age -17 and Older

Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE)  Decision:

Students above the compulsory school age–17 and older:

The PA Department of Education issued a letter in 2008 to the school districts and all diploma programs stating that any student 17 and older who desires a diploma program diploma must comply with the home education law. Thus, a parent must file an affidavit, keep a portfolio and log and have an evaluation for that student all four years including the end of his senior year and turn the portfolio and evaluation into the school district at the end of the year. It would behoove all parents, regardless of what diploma they are going to issue their student, a diploma program diploma, an out of state correspondence school diploma, or a parent issued diploma, to comply with the home education law. Otherwise, in the future, the student’s diploma may be declared invalid.
