Registration Information for Co-ops

Although the individual co-ops may have different registration methods, deadlines, and fees, all co-ops follow a three-step registration process. You MUST be a current MDHSA member in order to participate in a co-op. If you are a first-time member, you must wait until the membership year begins on June 1 to register for co-op. It is highly recommended that you register for co-op on June 1 as soon as your membership is active because there may be limited space available in the co-op you choose.

1) Parent Registration Form: Once you are an MDHSA member, you will receive your member password by email. The password will allow you to access the Member Portal where you will find the parent registration form for the co-op you select. On the form, list the names and ages of the children in your family who will be attending co-op. Also designate (New Member) what age range classes you, the adult, want to be assigned to for two periods or (Returning Member) fill out a description for the class you will teach and designate the age range of the class in which you want to be assigned as a helper. Send this form and the co-op registration fee for the semester to the committee of the co-op you selected.

2) Class List and Student Registration Form: Once the committee collects all of the parent registration forms, they compile a class list and schedule of classes. This takes time, so be patient. When the schedule is finalized, you will receive a class list that includes class fees (if any) and a student registration form. Fill out 1st and 2nd choice classes for each of your students. Classes fill up quickly, so return the student registration form ASAP. (Some co-ops might ask for payment of class fees at this point, others will ask for it on the first day of co-op. Refer to your co-op committee’s instructions on this matter.)

3) Class Schedules: Before co-op begins, you will receive paperwork that includes a schedule of your child(ren)’s classes. You will also receive a parent schedule for yourself indicating where/when you will be teaching or helping and when you’re scheduled for parents’ meeting.

Description:
Our fall semester begins in September after Labor Day and ends in December with an evening showcase (our “school” program). Our spring semester starts the beginning of January and ends the beginning of May with a morning showcase.

We offer classes for elementary, middle school and high school ages. We also provide nursery/toddler and preschool classes for younger siblings. Our morning begins with an opening assembly at 9:15 for all elementary aged children and younger and his/her parents. Those attending middle school and high school classes will report to their classrooms to prepare for their day. Our co-op day ends at 12:30.

Classes are taught by the parents. As a parent you can expect to help/teach in 2 one-hour classes or 1 hour-and-a-half class.  Your final class period will be in a Parent’s Meeting. First time parent attendees of Co-op South will help in two classes.  Once you have completed one semester with us, you are required to sign up to teach a class. Class fees can be charged to help cover your costs. We are nonprofit, so please keep in mind that class fees should cover expenses only.

Elementary and Middle school classes are one hour in length with three classes for each co-op day.  High school classes are 1 1/2 hours in length with two classes per co-op day. We try to offer several selections for each class period.  Some examples of elementary classes offered in the past include: 50 states, Exploring Great Artists, Fun with Science, Gym, Tae Kwon Do, Drama and more.  For our middle & high school levels we have offered Biology, World Literature, General Science, Spanish, Physics, Grammar, and Art to name a few. Most of our high school classes are credited classes and students will need to invest a number of hours apart from class time to complete the required course work.

Description:

Our fall semester begins the end of August/beginning of September and ends the beginning of December. Our spring semester starts the end of January and ends the beginning of May. Each semester concludes with a showcase where family and friends are invited to see what we’ve learned during the semester.

Each co-op session runs from 9:15 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. We begin with an opening for all families at 9:15 and then begin classes at 9:30. Three one-hour class periods are offered for students ages 3-5, 6-8, 9-11, and 12+.  Nursery is provided for children ages 2 and under. Our classes have a broad scope of topics in language arts, science, history, art, gym and life-skills.

Each parent is responsible to teach one class, serve as a helper in a second class, and be part of a parent meeting during a third class time. Parent meeting is a time of prayer, sharing and encouragement as homeschooling parents. New parents are not required to teach a class the first semester they join co-op. They will serve as helpers in two class periods instead.

There are other assorted activities throughout the year!

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at committee@MDHSANorth.com

BEFORE YOU REGISTER please be sure to have all of your needed clearances. Registrations received without the proper clearance will be rejected and refunded, minus a small fee.

Attendance Commitment

IMPORTANT:  When joining a Co-Op, please realize that you are making a commitment to teach or to help for the ENTIRE Co-Op semester. Each co-op is able to offer the classes it does because of committed teachers and helpers. If a family drops-out unexpectedly, there is no guarantee that another teacher or helper can be found to cover the classes of the adult who left; they may have to be canceled. The success of the co-op really does depend on each and every member who attends it.
